Are You
Ready For More Adventurous Interior Decorating Colors?
Although they will have you think differently, my
parents are very traditional people in terms of their aesthetics. The decorating
ideas that they used are pretty straightforward. They have good tastes, but none
of their tastes are very wild. They will use only basic decorating colors. The
walls will all be a tasteful shade of off-white, the furniture will all be nice
dark wood, and they will put up paintings everywhere. Using a basic decorating
color allows them to put up any artwork that they like. They believe that the
focus of the room should be the art.
Using more adventurous interior decorating colors lets you express yourself, but
paradoxically it limits your decorative options. When you use decorating ideas
like my parents... simple colors and tasteful dark woods... you can put up just
about anything that you want. It will all mesh with your decorating colors,
which is the beauty of that decorative scheme. This is why creams, and other
forms of off-white are such popular decorating colors. You can do anything you
want with them.
If you have more adventurous decorating ideas, however, you will have to make
some sacrifices. You will have to plan ahead of time what you want to put up on
the walls. If all of the art does not exhibit similar colors and composition,
some of it must be sacrificed. Many people are not comfortable with this. They
think that the art is more important than the decorating colors. They think that
art is not only decoration, but something that has an important effect on the
soul.
When I have interior decorator customers like this, I like to tell them to mix
things up little bit. Not every room has to exhibit the same decorating colors.
It is true that one room puts some limits on what you can do in the others. For
example, if you have a very open house, you can not paint the kitchen one color,
and the living room something that clashes strikingly with it. It will look off.
You can, however, use one set of decorating colors for your common areas and
another one for your bedrooms. Because the bedrooms are not public areas in most
houses, they do not have to match with the rest of the house. You can use any
decorating colors you like, without regard to the harmony of the whole.
